Our units of instruction come from the Math In Focus curriculum by Singapore. Below is a brief explanation of the units, as well some websites and materials to further work on with your child.
Unit 1 is all about place value and number sense.
Unit 2 covers number bonds, rounding, and estimation.
Students learn to master addition with and without regrouping up to 10,000.
Students will learn how to subtract with regrouping, without regrouping, and across zeros up to 10,000.
Unit 5 is all about bar models. Bar models are used as a word problem strategy across addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. In this chapter, we will largely concentrate on addition and subtraction bar models.
Students will gain on prior knowledge of multiplying facts 1-5 from second grade. Chapter 6 will emphasize multiples of numbers 6-9 using many hands-on techniques and strategies.
We become masters of using strategies to multiply 2 digit by 1 digit numbers in chapter 7.
Chapter 8 teaches students various division strategies, as well as how the concept is related to multiplication.
Bar modeling pops back up with multiplication and division. Chapter 9 also covers algebraic concepts such as input and output boxes.
Students will increase their knowledge about counting money and learn to make change from $1.00.
Chapter 11 teaches students to measure in metric length, mass, and volume.
Chapter 12 in an extension of the previous chapter 11. Students will apply measurement skills in one and two step word problems.

Chapter 13 will teach kids to collect, display and interpret data using frequency tables, bar graphs, picture
Chapter 14 is all about fractions. Kids will work to understand meanings and uses of fractions in real-world and
Chapter 15 teaches students to measure metric length, weight, and capacity.
Kids will expand their knowledge of time and temperature in chapter 16. We will learn how to read a thermometer, tell time to the nearest minute, and also learn about elapsed time.
Students will aim to understand and identify lines. They will also identify right angles, parallel, and perpendicular lines in the world around them.
Chapter 18 expands on student's prior knowledge of the two dimensional shapes they know and love. They will learn to classify polygons, and concepts of congruent and symmetrical figures.
Students learn about area and perimeter and how it is applicable in real world situations.
